A Guide to the Child Care Subsidy for Taree Families

One of the first questions most families ask us isn't about our program or our educators — it's "how much will this actually cost me?" The honest answer depends on the Child Care Subsidy (CCS), and because the system can feel confusing from the outside, we've put together a plain-English guide to help you understand it before you enrol.

This is general information, not financial advice. Your exact subsidy amount depends on your individual circumstances, so always confirm your figure using the official Services Australia calculator or by speaking with Centrelink directly.

What is the Child Care Subsidy?

The Child Care Subsidy is a federal government payment that reduces the out-of-pocket cost of approved childcare, including long day care services like ours. Rather than paying the full daily fee, eligible families pay a reduced "gap fee," with the subsidy covering the rest, paid directly to the centre on your behalf.

Who is eligible?

Broadly, CCS eligibility depends on three main factors:

Family income. Your combined family income determines what percentage of the fee is subsidised. Generally, lower household incomes receive a higher subsidy percentage, with the subsidy reducing as income increases.

Activity level. The number of hours of subsidised care you're entitled to each fortnight is based on your (and your partner's, if applicable) recognised activity — things like work, study, training, or actively looking for work.

Care type and service. Your child must be enrolled in an approved care service — which we are — and meet immunisation requirements under the government's "No Jab, No Pay" policy.

How is it calculated?

CCS isn't a flat percentage for everyone. It's calculated using a sliding scale based on your family's combined income, with both an income test and an hourly rate cap (the maximum hourly fee the government will subsidise — if your centre's fee is above that cap, you pay the difference on top of your own gap fee).

Because the calculation involves several moving parts, the most reliable way to get a number specific to your family is to use the Child Care Subsidy estimator on the Services Australia website, or set up your subsidy through your myGov account.

How do I apply?

1. Create or log into your myGov account and link it to Centrelink.

2. Submit a Child Care Subsidy claim, including your family income estimate and activity details for you (and your partner, if applicable).

3. Once approved, confirm your enrolment details with us — we'll work with you to finalise your CCS through our system once your child is enrolled.

4. Your subsidised gap fee will then apply automatically to your invoices.

It's worth applying for CCS before your child's first day where possible, so your gap fee is accurate from day one rather than being backdated or adjusted later.

What if my circumstances change?

If your income, work hours, or family situation changes during the year, it's important to update your details with Centrelink as soon as possible. CCS is reconciled against your actual income at tax time, so keeping your estimate current helps you avoid a surprise debt or a missed entitlement later.

We're here to help

While we can't give financial advice, our team has supported plenty of Taree families through this process before, and we're happy to help with the practical side — confirming enrolment details, days, and how your subsidy applies to your invoice. If you'd like to talk through what daycare might cost for your family, get in touch or book a tour.
